Small bowel transplant referrals policy

Small intestinal transplantation remains a high risk strategy for the management of irreversible intestinal failure. This procedure should at present be reserved for patients who have complications of the artificial feeding treatment known as total parenteral nutrition (TPN), making this form of nutritional support untenable.

We would be glad to assess patients for small bowel transplantation if they fall into the following categories :

  • Patients have irreversible small bowel failure and one or both of the following :
    • Loss of venous access making TPN impossible or tenuous.
    • Progressive TPN related liver disease.
  • Patients may also be considered for small bowel transplantation as part of a multivisceral graft if they have combined mesenteric and portal thrombosis.
  • Patients with retroperitoneal tumour involving the coeliac axis requiring resection.

Referrals for assessment can be made to Dr S.J. Middleton
