The small bowel transplant program

Addenbrooke's Hospital Transplant Unit is a designated national adult intestinal transplant unit.

During 1998-99 the intestinal transplant programme has become well established. 2 patients aged 22 and 25 years were referred to the Transplant Unit for assessment for intestinal transplantation, and both were ultimately transplanted after waiting 267 and 346 days respectively for suitable organs to become available. The appointment of a part-time small bowel transplant co-ordinator has enabled revision of protocols, established quality of life assessments and clearer lines of communication amongst the multidisciplinary team.

The unit has participated in producing information for patients and has established a comprehensive database of clinical information in relation to intestinal transplantation. Our current survival rates look promising although this remains a small programme and we wait to receive confirmation of funding for the clinical evaluation phase of the work.
